Weight Loss Basics - June 25th, 2009

Many women wonder how they can ever lose weight after trying so many products and fad diets.  Their frustration is in part caused by the fact that they often don’t learn the basic facts of weight loss.  When we say weight loss, we really mean fat loss.  The reason we get fat is because we eat more than we burn, and just like you didn’t gain that weight overnight, you can’t lose that quickly either.  Fat loss is all about calories.

One pound of fat contains 3500 stored calories.  So in order to lose one pound of body fat, you need to burn 3500 calories more than you consume.  Generally a good goal to shoot for is losing 2 pounds per week.  That means a total of 7000 calories need to be burned, which of course translates to a deficit of 1000 calories per day.  This means that through a combination of diet and exercise, you have to burn 1000 calories more per day than you eat.  There is literally no other way to lose fat, except for liposuction, but that’s temporary and unhealthy.  In order to lose significant amounts of weight, a lifestyle change is usually required.  You need to change your habits, tastes, and desires.  While not easy, it can be done.  And it leads to a healthier, more fulfilling life.
