Smoking & Weight Loss - September 7th, 2009

Deciding to try to quit smoking is a worthy undertaking.  It is difficult to break a habit, and smoking is said to be very addictive.  Some people believe it is mind over matter.  Whatever you think, congratulations on your effort to be healthier.  The first thing to do is to set a day to quit.  It can be today!  A great thing to do on the day you quit is to let your friends and family know.  This isn’t so they can congratulate you, but if they are going to be around you it will help them to know you are quitting.  This way they won’t offer you a cigarette or assume you would like to smoke.

Try to keep yourself busy.  You can work, see a movie, clean your house, exercise, or whatever keeps you occupied.  When you go out, stick to places where smoking is not allowed.  This could be in a movie theatre, a museum, or a health club.  Some of the things that will feel funny might be not having a cigarette in your hand.  You can hold a pencil, squeeze a stress ball, or anything you can find.  If you need to keep your mouth occupied, drink extra water, chew gum, have a toothpick handy, or eat carrot sticks.  Try to avoid having a lot of snacks around, because you’ll want to eat them to keep your mouth busy.  Just following these tips can help you get through your first day without smoking a cigarette!
